Frequently asked questions
FAQ
What this project is, when things ship, and how to build along. If your question isn’t here, the contact line is at the bottom.
The project
What is AKULA?
AKULA is an open build of an autonomous underwater vehicle — a deep-diving research boat documented in public as it's built.
Is this a real vehicle or a concept?
It's a real vehicle under active construction. The roadmap tracks which modules are done, in progress, or planned.
Channel & content
Where do you publish?
Build progress lands in the Build Log here, with longer videos on the channel. Subscribe to The Build Log to follow along.
How often do you post?
Whenever a module reaches a milestone worth showing. We'd rather post something real than something scheduled.
Build it yourself
Can I build my own?
That's the goal. We publish the open schematics and a firmware SDK for each module so you can build the hardware yourself.
Is everything open source?
The schematics and the SDK are open. The hard-won core of each module — the tuning and calibration — lives in the paid build pack that keeps the project going.
Safety & legal
Is operating an AUV legal where I am?
Rules vary by country and water. It's on you to check local regulations before you put anything in the water.
How do you handle failures underwater?
Fault management escalates from logging, to aborting a task, to a passive drop weight that floats the boat home with no power at all.
Account & subscription
Why do I need an account?
Only to save your progress through the guides and to manage your subscription. We sign you in with a magic link — no passwords.
How do I unsubscribe?
Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can manage everything from your account page.
